Cement board is not waterproof. A shower needs a bonded waterproofing membrane or a sheet system behind the tile, and the failures that show up as a stain on the ceiling below almost always trace to that one decision rather than to the tile or the grout.
Slope is what makes a shower floor work. Water has to reach the drain from every point, and a curbless entry raises the difficulty considerably because the slope has to happen within the floor structure rather than above it.
