Rigid vinyl is unforgiving of a subfloor that is out of flat. Every dip and hump telegraphs through as a soft spot or a clicking joint, and leveling compound before installation is cheaper than lifting the floor afterwards to find out why it moves.
Expansion gap is the other thing that decides whether a floating floor stays flat. Fitted tight to the wall and to the door casings, it has nowhere to go on a hot day and peaks in the middle of the room. The gap is hidden under the shoe molding, so there is no reason to skip it.
